Can a Mac Studio run large AI models?
What Apple’s specifications allow, and where a single Mac stops being enough.

Short answer. Yes. A Mac Studio can hold very large models: Apple lists unified memory from 36 GB up to 128 GB on the M5 Max and up to 512 GB on the M5 Ultra, with memory bandwidth of 460 to 614 GB/s and 1.2 TB/s. The limits are practical. The GPU may not get all of that memory by default, serving many people means adding software for accounts and sharing, and Apple measures up to 200 W (M5 Max) and 385 W (M5 Ultra) at the wall under load. It suits one technical person well. An office also needs named accounts, roles and a record of who asked what.

What Apple lists

Apple’s specification page also gives a maximum continuous power of 480 W, an operating temperature of 10 to 35 °C and 10Gb Ethernet. Apple’s support page says its power figures are measured at the wall and include power-supply losses; “max” means a compute-intensive test that maximises processor use.

What the memory holds

Apple does not give the GPU all of the memory. Its Metal documentation describes a recommended maximum working set for the GPU, and a community note reports about three quarters of memory by default on Apple silicon. The right-hand column below uses that three-quarters figure as a planning assumption, not an Apple number, and every case is an estimate using the weights-plus-cache method.

Where a Mac needs care

  • The GPU memory cap. Raising it is possible with a system setting that community guides describe; Apple’s pages checked here do not document a fixed share, so confirm the figure your runtime prints when it loads a model.
  • Software. llama.cpp’s README describes Apple silicon as a first-class target through Metal, Ollama supports Metal, and vLLM’s README lists Apple silicon among the hardware it supports through plugins.
  • Sharing. In Ollama, parallel requests multiply the context memory: a 2K context with 4 parallel requests becomes 8K and needs extra memory. The Ollama and Apple pages checked here do not describe named users, roles or an audit trail, so add them yourself.
  • Heat and power. Apple measures up to 385 W at the wall for the M5 Ultra; plan ventilation and a power supply, not just a shelf.

Mac Studio or an office appliance

ANVE’s launch tiers use AMD Strix Halo-class or NVIDIA hardware, not Apple silicon, and add the office layer: named users, roles, makers for minutes, documents and presentations, and a log of every model call. The comparison page sets the two side by side. Launch specifications; no sealed ANVE unit exists yet.

Questions people ask

How much memory does a Mac Studio need for a 70B model?
At 4-bit a 70B model is about 42 GB of weights, or about 47 GB with a short conversation. A 64 GB Mac only just holds that; a 128 GB Mac is comfortable and can hold an 8-bit 70B model.
Can several people share one Mac Studio?
Technically yes, through the OpenAI-compatible server in Ollama or LM Studio. Each simultaneous conversation costs cache memory, and the pages checked here do not describe accounts, roles or an audit trail, so add them yourself.
Does 512 GB mean any model will run?
It means models such as Llama 3.1 405B at 4-bit (249.1 GB per llama.cpp’s documentation) can be loaded. How quickly they answer is a separate question that this page does not measure.
