Malayalam (മലയാളം) has its own script. The 2011 Census counted 3,48,38,819 people with Malayalam as their mother tongue, 2.88% of India and the tenth largest group. Kerala had 3,24,13,213. Karnataka had 7,74,057, Tamil Nadu 7,26,096, Maharashtra 3,66,153 and Delhi 88,662. The Census counts people in India only.
Malayalam builds long words by adding endings, and the MILU paper notes weaker results in such languages. Word error rate marks a whole word wrong if one ending is wrong, so percentages for such languages can read harsher than English ones. Compare models on the same audio rather than against figures from other languages.
For English meetings, the Svarah paper measured Whisper large at 8.1% word error rate on speakers whose mother tongue is Malayalam, against 5.3% for native Hindi speakers.
