Can the AI work with the network cable unplugged? It depends which cable: the internet uplink, or the box’s own link to the office.
Short answer. Yes for the models, with a catch about which cable. If the internet uplink is cut, local models keep answering and the office network keeps working. If the box’s own cable is pulled, it keeps running but nobody can reach it. What stops when the internet goes is anything that calls out: cloud models, online look-ups, cloud voices, update and licence checks, and time synchronisation. Several open tools make such calls by default, so test it: pull the uplink during a pilot and write down what breaks. A box with no clock source drifts, which matters because logs need accurate timestamps.

Things that quietly need the internet
Update checks. As of October 2026, Open WebUI checks for new versions by default; its OFFLINE_MODE setting disables update checks and automatic model downloads.
Model hub calls. Hugging Face libraries contact the Hub to check for newer files unless HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1 is set.
Cloud features of local runtimes. Ollama’s cloud models and web search are switched off with OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1.
Time sync. A box with no time source drifts. CERT-In’s FAQ explains that without accurate timestamps it is extremely challenging to re-create the sequence of events in an incident.
Licence and telemetry calls. Ask the vendor whether any exist and what happens when they fail.
Connectors and tools that fetch web pages or call outside services.

A cable test for your pilot
Write down every feature you intend to use.
Pull the internet uplink at the router for an hour in working time.
Try each feature and note what works, what fails and how it fails: an error message, a hang or a quietly wrong answer.
Check the firewall and box logs for failed outbound connections. The list of destinations is a map of what the box depends on.
Restore the link and check the box catches up: queued jobs, clock, update checks.
Repeat with the box’s own cable pulled, to see what staff do instead.
04
Clocks and logs
CERT-In’s directions ask covered organisations to synchronise ICT clocks with the NTP servers of NIC or NPL, or servers traceable to them. Its FAQ lists samay1.nic.in, samay2.nic.in and time.nplindia.org, and says another accurate time source is acceptable if it does not deviate from NIC and NPL. At a site with no internet, that can mean a local time source that is checked against a trusted reference.
The same directions call for logs to be kept for a rolling 180 days. A log with the wrong time is hard to use, so decide where the box gets its time before you cut the cable. This is general information, not legal advice.

What ANVE says
ANVE is a private AI appliance that runs its AI makers on the box in the office; image generation uses the box’s own GPU through ComfyUI. The parts that reach out are the optional ones. Cloud models can be added only by an administrator. The research maker looks up sources online only when asked. The podcast maker uses cloud narration today, with local narration not on ANVE yet. Zoho and other tools connect through connectors an administrator approves. ANVE does not update itself over the internet (see /security). The sealed unit, which is in design, adds two physical switches with lights: one cuts the network and one cuts the microphones.
Whether every other function works with the uplink cut, and whether the box makes any other outbound connection on its own, is not stated here. Run the cable test above, and ask ANVEAI for a written list of every outbound connection before a paid pilot.

Questions people ask
Is “offline” the same as “air-gapped”?
No. An offline-capable box can still sit on a connected office network. Air-gapped means the system is physically isolated from other networks, and updates arrive by controlled media.
Will the clock drift if the box cannot reach a time server?
Yes. Every computer clock drifts without a reference. Give the box a local time source and check it against a trusted one regularly.
Can we use it where there is no internet at all?
The models can run. Updates then have to arrive on checked media, and any feature that calls out, such as cloud models, will not be available.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
