Can I switch to a newer model later?
What changes when the model changes, and what stays the same.

Short answer. Yes, if you check five things first. Open-weight models are files, and local servers such as Ollama and vLLM serve them behind an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, so applications can keep the same address while the model changes. Before switching, confirm that the new model fits your memory (the KV cache differs by design), that your runtime supports its architecture, that its licence allows your use, how its default settings behave, and that it passes your own test set. On ANVE, the model gateway logs the model used for every call, so you can see which model produced which output.

Five checks before you switch

CheckWhy it mattersExample from published model pages
MemorySize and cache differ between modelsQwen3.8-27B needs about 64 KiB of cache per token against 256 KiB for Qwen3-32B, by our arithmetic from their configurations
Runtime supportNew designs need a new runtime versionQwen3.8-27B mixes linear and ordinary attention; its card names Transformers, vLLM and SGLang as compatible
LicenceTerms differ by modelQwen3.8-27B, Qwen3-32B and gpt-oss are Apache 2.0 on their cards; Llama 3.3 uses Meta’s Community Licence
Default behaviourDefaults change answers and costQwen3.8-27B thinks by default and can be switched off per request; gpt-oss must be used with its harmony format

How to switch safely

  • Run the new model beside the old one rather than replacing it, if memory allows. Ollama can keep up to three models loaded by default when they fit.
  • Replay 30 to 50 real, past requests and compare. Check numbers, names, dates and whether each answer quotes its source.
  • Check the settings: context length, thinking mode and any required message format.
  • Move one team or one application first, and keep the old model file for rolling back.
  • Watch the call log for a week for errors, long delays and unusually long answers.
03

What stays the same, and what does not

The endpoint, your documents and your users stay put. One thing does not move: the embedding model that built your search index. Different embedding models produce vectors of different sizes, 768 numbers for nomic-embed-text-v1.5 and 1,024 for BGE-M3, so changing the embedding model means rebuilding the index from your documents. The chat model can be changed without that.

Where ANVE fits

Every model call on ANVE is logged with the user, app and model, and whether it ran locally or in the cloud, so a change of model leaves a record. Cloud models are optional, added by an administrator, and their answers are labelled. On updates, ANVE’s published position (see the security page) is that ANVEAI installs them on site today, signed update packages applied offline by USB are not on ANVE yet, and ANVE does not update itself over the internet. How a particular model change would be tested and delivered is not described there, so ask for it in writing before a paid pilot. The software runs today on a development machine and no sealed unit exists yet.

Questions people ask

Will my existing prompts still work with a new model?
Often, but not always. Models differ in how they follow instructions, whether they think before answering and what message format they expect. Test the prompts you depend on.
Do I need new hardware for a newer model?
Only if it needs more memory than you have. Newer designs can need less cache for the same context, as the table shows, so some upgrades fit on the same box.
Can I run the old and new model together?
Yes if both fit in memory. Ollama keeps up to three models loaded by default when they fit entirely in GPU memory, and queues requests otherwise.

What is not real yet

No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.

Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
