Ollama or vLLM: which serves an office better? A plain comparison, one public benchmark and a rule of thumb.
Short answer. Ollama for simplicity and a handful of users, vLLM when many people ask at the same moment on a Linux server. Ollama installs quickly on Windows, macOS and Linux and handles single requests well; vLLM adds continuous batching and PagedAttention to serve many requests at once. Red Hat measured one NVIDIA A100 40GB serving Llama 3.1 8B: vLLM reached a peak of 793 tokens per second against 41 for Ollama, with 80 ms against 673 ms P99 time to first token at peak throughput. Both offer an OpenAI-compatible API, so applications can move between them.

Question
Ollama
vLLM
Systems
Windows, macOS, Linux
Linux; Windows through WSL
Setup
An installer or one command; a model library
A Python package or Docker image; models usually from Hugging Face
Concurrent requests
Parallel requests per model default to 1; extra requests queue, up to 512 by default
Continuous batching, PagedAttention and prefix caching for many simultaneous requests
Model files
Pulls from its library; imports GGUF files and Safetensors weights, and does not quantize GGUF on import
Hugging Face-format models; GGUF is supported, but its documentation calls that highly experimental and under-optimised
Hardware
NVIDIA, AMD through ROCm or Vulkan, Apple Metal
NVIDIA, AMD ROCm, Intel, CPUs; Apple silicon through a plugin
OpenAI-compatible API and tool calling
Yes
Yes, with a tool parser flag

What Red Hat measured
The test used one NVIDIA A100-PCIE-40GB, the GuideLLM tool, 1 to 256 concurrent users and 300 seconds per run, with Ollama tuned to allow parallel requests. Red Hat concluded that Ollama is a simple tool for local development, prototyping and single-user use, and vLLM the choice for production under heavy load. It is an 8B model at 16-bit on a datacentre GPU: not office hardware, and not a chip such as Strix Halo. The vLLM paper (2023) reported 2 to 4 times the throughput of older systems at the same latency.

Choosing
Ollama is enough when a few people use the server, requests rarely overlap, you want to start in an afternoon and the machine is Windows or macOS.
Choose vLLM when many people ask at the same time, the server is Linux, a GPU does the work and throughput under load matters more than ease.
Check your exact chip against each project’s hardware page. Ollama lists the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 for ROCm on Linux; confirm vLLM’s support for the chip you intend to buy.
Do not choose on speed alone: confirm that the model you want runs well in the runtime, in the format you will use.
04
Moving between them
Both expose an OpenAI-compatible API, so applications written for one usually need only a new address and model name for the other. The usual model files differ, GGUF or Safetensors imports for Ollama and Hugging Face format for vLLM, so keep both if you test both. In its development build, ANVE reaches its models through the runtime’s own OpenAI-compatible endpoint, Ollama or vLLM; the governed ANVE API, with a key per user or agent and every request in the audit trail, is not on ANVE yet.

Questions people ask
Can I start with Ollama and move to vLLM later?
Yes. Both offer an OpenAI-compatible API, so applications usually keep working after a change of address and model name. You will need the model in the format each expects.
Is vLLM harder to run?
It has more to choose, such as how much GPU memory it pre-allocates for the cache, and it needs Linux. Teams without an administrator may prefer Ollama.
Does the Red Hat result apply to my office?
It shows the direction for many simultaneous users on a datacentre GPU with an 8B model. For one to three users on other hardware the gap may be small, so test your own load.
