Mini PC A small, capable computer for one technical user, and what an office needs on top.
Short answer. A mini PC is a small desktop computer that holds a processor, memory and storage in a box that fits on a shelf or behind a monitor. Recent models built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max chips can hold 128 GB or more of memory shared between the CPU and GPU, which is enough for large local AI models. Framework, for example, lists a 4.5-litre desktop with up to 192 GB of LPDDR5X and two M.2 SSD slots. A mini PC suits one technical user. An office of many people also needs accounts, roles, an audit trail, updates and someone to call when it fails.
01
What counts as a mini PC
There is no formal definition. The name covers desktop computers small enough to sit on a shelf. The size is a trade: less room for cooling, fewer expansion slots and one processor package. Framework’s desktop, for example, is a 4.5-litre box measuring 96.8 by 205.5 by 226.1 mm and weighing 3.1 kg.

What to check before you buy
Memory: the capacity, and how much of it the GPU can use. AMD says up to 112 GB of 128 GB on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, set through the BIOS.
Bandwidth: the bus width and speed. AMD lists a 256-bit bus and up to LPDDR5x-8000 for that chip, which is 256 GB/s.
Cooling and noise at a sustained load, not a short test; see TDP and thermal throttling.
ECC: AMD’s page for the 395 does not list it, so ask.
Storage: number of M.2 slots, encryption, and where backups go.
Software: whether the chip is on the vendor’s ROCm or CUDA support list for the tools you intend to use.
Support: who patches the operating system and the AI software, and what happens when the machine fails.

From one user to a whole office
A mini PC is a computer, not a service. Someone has to create accounts, decide who sees which documents, keep a record of what was asked, update models and fix it when it fails. For one or two technical users that is a weekend project. For an office it is a continuing job. ANVE’s own note on this argues that for one technical person a mini PC with Ollama is the right answer, and that ANVE is for the office around that person.
05
Where ANVE stands
ANVE is one device on the office network for many named users, with every model call logged. ANVE One’s launch specification uses an AMD Strix Halo class chip, the same family as the mini PCs above; ANVE Office uses a desktop processor and an NVIDIA graphics card. On the support questions above: ANVEAI installs updates on site today, signed update packages applied offline by USB are not on ANVE yet, and ANVE does not update itself over the internet. Roles today are administrator and user. Every order includes a perpetual licence for the software delivered with the unit, there is no remote kill switch, and the box keeps working if ANVEAI shuts down. No sealed unit exists yet, and ANVE has published no speed figures.

Questions people ask
Can a mini PC run a 70-billion-parameter model?
AMD says the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128 GB of unified memory can run 70-billion-parameter models on the device. How fast depends on memory bandwidth, so ask for measured speed at your precision.
Is a mini PC enough for a small office?
For one to three technical users it can be. For a shared office you also need accounts, roles, an audit trail and support, which is what our comparison with a mini PC covers.
Do mini PCs have ECC memory?
AMD’s page for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 lists LPDDR5x memory and no ECC option. Check each maker’s specification.
How big an SSD does a mini PC for AI need?
Add up the model files, documents, recordings, logs and a backup copy. AMD’s example model files run from 6.2 GB to 76 GB at 4-bit.
