NVMe SSD
Where an AI box keeps its models, documents and logs.

Short answer. An NVMe SSD is a solid-state drive that talks to the computer over PCI Express using the NVM Express (NVMe) protocol, instead of the older SATA interface built for spinning disks. NVMe was designed for flash: NVM Express says it supports up to 64K queues of 64K commands each, against 32 commands in a single SATA queue, and a PCIe Gen 3 ×4 link already carries about 4 GB/s. In an AI box the SSD holds the model files, the office’s documents and the logs. It decides how fast a model loads, not how fast it answers, so capacity and a backup plan matter more than the fastest drive.

01

What NVMe is

NVM Express is the non-profit consortium that defines NVMe. Its specification set, at version 2.4 and released on 4 August 2026, defines how host software communicates with non-volatile memory over PCI Express and other transports, and NVM Express calls it the industry standard for SSDs in all form factors, including M.2, U.2, add-in cards and EDSFF. In a compact computer the drive is usually an M.2 stick: Framework’s 4.5-litre desktop, for example, has two M.2 2280 slots.

What lives on the SSD of an AI box

Plan for each of these, then add headroom. Model files are the easiest to count: AMD’s published examples are 6.2 GB for a 9-billion-parameter model, 20.5 GB for a 35-billion-parameter model and 76 GB for a 122-billion-parameter model, all at 4-bit.

ItemHow to size itExample
Model filesSeveral models, plus an older version to roll back to6.2 GB, 20.5 GB and 76 GB files in AMD’s examples
Office documents and their indexGrows with the archiveContracts, minutes, scans, invoices
Recordings and transcriptsDepends on how long you keep themA year of meeting audio, if retained
Logs and audit trailSmall per entry, kept for the retention periodEvery model call, with user and model
BackupsAt least the size of the live data, on another deviceExternal drive or office server
04

Loading a model is the SSD’s job, and only that

A 20.5 GB model file over a link that carries 4 GB/s takes about 5 seconds to read at best, and about 10 seconds on a drive that reads 2 GB/s. After that the weights sit in memory, so the SSD does not decide how fast the model answers. That is set by memory bandwidth.

05

What to check

  • Capacity: current models, a second version of each, documents, recordings, logs and growth.
  • Slots: how many M.2 slots there are and whether you can add a second drive later.
  • Lanes: each NVMe drive normally uses a ×4 link, and AMD lists 16 usable PCIe 4.0 lanes for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, so ask how they are shared.
  • RAID: AMD lists NVMe boot, RAID 0 and RAID 1 support for that chip. RAID 1 mirrors two drives so one can fail, but it is not a backup, because deleted or corrupted files are copied to both.
  • Encryption at rest, and backups to a second place, tested by restoring a file.

Where ANVE stands

ANVE keeps everything in one database on the box in the office, and logs every model call. Full-disk encryption and secure boot are part of the appliance image, which is not on ANVE yet, as ANVE’s security page says. Backup design and drive capacity are not among the published positions, so get them in writing before a paid pilot. No sealed unit exists yet.

Questions people ask

Is NVMe faster than SATA?
In design, yes. NVM Express says NVMe supports 64K queues of 64K commands where SATA has one queue of 32, and needs less than half the CPU work per request. The PCIe link itself carries about 4 GB/s on Gen 3 ×4, and more on newer generations.
How big an SSD does a private AI need?
Add up the model files you will keep, the documents and their index, the recordings you retain, the logs and a backup copy. AMD’s example model files run from 6.2 GB to 76 GB at 4-bit. Our storage question page walks through it.
Does a faster SSD make AI answers faster?
No. It shortens the time to load a model into memory. Answer speed is limited by memory bandwidth, not by the drive.
Do I need RAID?
RAID 1 keeps a mirror so one drive can fail without downtime, and AMD lists NVMe RAID 0 and RAID 1 support for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. It does not replace a backup.
