Thermal throttling Why a long job can run slower than a short benchmark suggested.
Short answer. Thermal throttling is a chip slowing itself down to avoid overheating. When temperature reaches a limit, the processor or graphics card lowers its clock speed, so a long job such as transcribing a day of meetings runs slower than a short test suggested. NVIDIA documents separate reasons: a software thermal slowdown when the GPU is hotter than its maximum operating temperature, and a hardware thermal slowdown that cuts core clocks by a factor of two or more. AMD lists 100 °C as the maximum operating temperature of the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. On NVIDIA hardware, nvidia-smi shows which reasons are active.
01
How it happens
Chips are built to run fast when they can and slow down when they must. Intel notes that a processor can exceed its rated power for a limited time until it reaches a thermal throttle temperature or a power-delivery limit. NVIDIA tells you which of several limits is holding the clocks down, and says that if every reason reads “Not Active”, the clocks are as high as possible.
Reason NVIDIA reports
What it means
SW power cap
Software power scaling lowers clocks because the GPU is drawing too much power
SW thermal slowdown
Clocks are lowered because GPU temperature is above its maximum operating temperature
HW thermal slowdown
Hardware cuts core clocks by a factor of two or more because temperature is too high
HW power brake
An external signal, for example from the system power supply, forces a slowdown
Sync boost
A GPU in a boost group is held to the clocks of the slowest GPU in the group
02
How it shows up in an office
Transcribing a day of recordings: the first hours run quickly, the later ones slow down.
Month-end batch jobs, such as reading hundreds of scanned invoices, finish later than the first few suggested.
The fan gets louder in the afternoon, and the room is warmer.
An image or document queue that is quick at 9 a.m. is slower at 4 p.m.
03
How to test a machine
Run a realistic job for at least half an hour and compare the speed in the first minutes with the speed at the end. On NVIDIA hardware, nvidia-smi -q -d PERFORMANCE lists the clock event reasons, and its counters, in microseconds, show how long each reason has held the clocks down. For AMD hardware, ROCm includes AMD SMI for monitoring, and AMD’s own blog uses rocm-smi to watch GPU memory.
Write down the room temperature as well: a test in an air-conditioned showroom says little about a store room in May.
04
How to reduce it
Give the machine space and clear airflow; do not enclose it in a closed cabinet.
Keep filters and vents free of dust.
Check the maximum ambient temperature the maker rates it for.
Use a lower power limit if noise or heat matters more than peak speed: NVIDIA documents that the power limit can be set with nvidia-smi.
Ask the vendor for results of a sustained run, not a peak benchmark.
05
Where ANVE stands
No sealed ANVE unit exists yet, so ANVE has no measured sustained-speed figures to publish. Ask any vendor for sustained results at your room temperature, and get any figure ANVE gives in writing before a paid pilot.
06
Questions people ask
Is thermal throttling harmful?
It is a protective mechanism, so it is not damage in itself. Frequent throttling does mean the cooling, or the room, is not matched to the workload.
How hot is too hot?
It depends on the chip. AMD lists 100 °C as the maximum operating temperature of the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. NVIDIA’s tools report each card’s slowdown temperature and maximum operating temperature, so read them from your own card.
Does throttling change the answers?
No. It lowers speed, not the arithmetic, so answers are the same but arrive later.
Can software cause slowdowns that look like overheating?
Yes. NVIDIA lists software power caps and sync-boost groups as separate reasons, so check which one is active before blaming the cooling.
