Konkani (कोंकणी) is written in Devanagari, which is the official script in Goa, in Roman letters among Christian communities, in Kannada script in Karnataka, in Malayalam script in Kerala and in Perso-Arabic script among some Muslim communities. The models above list Devanagari only, so an office writing Konkani in Roman letters, or a Karnataka office using Kannada script, has no listed model for its own text.
The 2011 Census counted 22,56,502 people with Konkani as their mother tongue, 0.19% of India and the nineteenth largest group. Goa had 9,64,305, Karnataka 7,88,294, Maharashtra 3,99,255 and Kerala 69,449. The count fell 9.34% between 2001 and 2011, the steepest fall of any scheduled language. The Home Ministry says Konkani joined the Eighth Schedule in 1992.
For English meetings, the Svarah paper found Whisper large at 6.4% word error rate on speakers whose mother tongue is Konkani, against 5.3% for native Hindi speakers.
