The 2011 Census counted 17,61,079 people with Manipuri as their mother tongue, 0.15% of India and the twentieth largest group. It counts Meithai under Manipuri. Manipur had 15,22,132, Assam 1,68,133 and Tripura 23,779. Manipuri and Bodo are the only two scheduled languages in the Tibeto-Burmese family, in the Census grouping. The Home Ministry says Manipuri joined the Eighth Schedule in 1992.
Which script does your office use? IndicTrans2 supports Meitei Mayek (mni_Mtei) and Bengali script (mni_Beng); NLLB-200 supports only the Bengali script. Do not confuse Manipuri with Bishnupriya Manipuri, which the Census counts as a separate language with 79,646 speakers.
The Svarah paper’s 19 mother-tongue groups do not include Manipuri, so there is no accent result for Manipuri speakers’ English.
