What is the difference between an AI model and an AI app?
The model is the engine. The app is everything else a person actually uses.

Short answer. An AI model is the trained file, a set of weights, that turns an input into an output, such as Qwen, Gemma or OpenAI’s GPT models. An AI app is the product built around one or more models: the screen you type into, accounts and permissions, file upload, search, memory and logs. ChatGPT is an app, and OpenAI’s API gives developers access to its models separately. The same model can sit behind many apps, and one app can use several models: Microsoft says administrators can decide whether Copilot uses models from Anthropic and OpenAI. When you compare products, compare the app and the model separately.

Why the difference matters when you buy

  • A better model does not fix a weak app. A strong model without accounts, citations or logs still leaves the office without a record.
  • A good app can change models. Open WebUI works with Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs, so the model behind it can be swapped.
  • Ask where each layer runs. The app may be local while a model is in the cloud, or the reverse; Ollama’s library lists cloud variants of models beside local ones.
  • Licences attach to models, and contracts to apps. A model’s Apache 2.0 licence says nothing about an app’s data terms.
  • Features such as web search, memory, projects and connectors belong to the app. OpenAI’s plans list them separately from the models.
03

Three examples

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s app. Its pricing page lists the models available on each plan, and separately lists app features such as search, memory, projects and connectors. OpenAI’s API Platform gives developers access to its models for building their own applications.

Microsoft Copilot is an app inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. Microsoft describes it as coordinating large language models with content in Microsoft Graph and the Microsoft 365 apps, and says it offers models from Anthropic and OpenAI as well as models hosted and operated by Microsoft.

A local setup might use Ollama as the runtime, a Gemma or Qwen model as the model, and Open WebUI as the app. Open WebUI’s README describes accounts and groups, LDAP and single sign-on, and local document search; it does not include the model.

Questions to ask a vendor

  • Which models does the app use, and can I see which one answered?
  • Can I change the model, or add my own?
  • Where does each layer run: the app, the runtime and the model?
  • Which features are the app’s, and which depend on the model?
  • What is logged, and does the log record the model as well as the user?

Where ANVE fits

ANVE is an app suite and an office layer around open models on the box; ANVE One’s launch default is a 27B-class model. Its model gateway logs every call with the user, app, model and whether it ran locally or in the cloud, so the app and the model are recorded separately. Cloud models are optional, added by an administrator, and their answers are labelled. ANVE is pre-release.

Questions people ask

Is ChatGPT a model?
No. ChatGPT is OpenAI’s app. Its pricing page lists the models available on each plan, and OpenAI’s API gives developers access to models separately.
Is Ollama a model or an app?
Neither. It is a runtime that downloads and serves models, with a command-line chat and an API. Apps such as Open WebUI sit in front of it.
Can I use the same model in different apps?
Yes, if the apps can connect to the runtime that serves it. Many tools accept any OpenAI-compatible server address.
Which matters more, the model or the app?
For office work the app usually decides whether people use the system and whether you have records. The model decides the quality of the answers. Test both on your own documents.

What is not real yet

No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.

Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
