Can AI understand scanned PDFs?
Yes, after the page images are read. How well depends on the scan.

Short answer. Yes, once the page images are turned into text. A scanned PDF is a stack of pictures, so an AI system first reads it with OCR or a vision-language model and then works on the text. Open tools do this locally: OCRmyPDF adds a searchable text layer using Tesseract, and Docling parses layout, reading order and table structure, with OCR for scanned PDFs and local execution documented for air-gapped environments. Quality depends on the scan: Tesseract works best at 300 dpi or more, and skewed pages and noise reduce accuracy. Tables, stamps, handwriting and mixed languages are the usual weak points, so check figures and names against the image.

01

How a scan becomes something AI can use

  • Clean-up: straighten and rotate pages, and remove noise. OCRmyPDF deskews, rotates and cleans pages before recognition.
  • Recognition: OCR or a vision-language model reads the characters. OCRmyPDF uses Tesseract and supports more than 100 languages.
  • Layout: tables, columns and reading order are rebuilt. Docling lists page layout, reading order and table structure among its PDF features.
  • Understanding: a language model summarises, searches or answers questions on the text, with the page image kept for reference.

What affects accuracy

Skew and rotationLine segmentation quality drops significantly if a page is too skewedDeskew before recognition
Noise and bordersSome noise cannot be removed in the black-and-white conversion; large borders can cause problemsCrop and clean the page

How the models compare on documents

OmniDocBench is a benchmark for parsing documents. On version 1.5, Google DeepMind reports an average edit distance of 0.131 for Gemma 4 31B, 0.181 for E4B and 0.290 for E2B, where lower is better. Alibaba reports a score of 91.1 for Qwen3.8-27B on the same benchmark, where higher is better. The pattern is the one seen elsewhere: larger models parse documents more accurately, and these are vendor-reported figures on a public benchmark, not results on your files.

04

A practical workflow

  • Scan at 300 dpi or more, flat and square.
  • Run OCR to produce a searchable PDF and keep the page images.
  • Extract tables with a layout-aware tool and check that columns line up.
  • Spot-check names, amounts and dates against the image, and check that totals add up.
  • For forms and bills, define the fields you expect and validate them.
  • Keep the original scan, and record what was processed and by whom.

Where ANVE fits

ANVE’s vision models read scanned documents (OCR), photos and diagrams, its bills maker reads GST bills, and question answering over the office’s own documents shows the source passage. ANVE runs these on the box. ANVE is pre-release, and the software runs today on a development machine.

06

Questions people ask

Is a scanned PDF searchable?
Not until it has a text layer. OCRmyPDF describes adding an OCR text layer to scanned PDF files so that they can be searched or copy-pasted.
Can AI extract tables from a scanned PDF?
Often, with a layout-aware tool: Docling lists table structure among its PDF features. Check totals and column alignment by hand, because a shifted column can change the meaning.
Does OCR work for Hindi and other Indian languages?
Microsoft’s Read model lists Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Nepali and Urdu for printed text, and OCRmyPDF supports more than 100 languages through Tesseract. Check the list for your language and test on your documents.
Should the scanned image be kept?
Yes. Keep the original beside the extracted text so a reviewer can check a doubtful figure against the page.

What is not real yet

No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.

Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
