Can AI proofread and check documents? Yes. Ask for suggested edits, not a silent rewrite.
Short answer. Yes, with the right instruction. AI proofreading catches spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency slips quickly, and can check things that rule-based tools cannot, such as whether a figure in a summary matches the table. Its weakness is over-correction. A 2023 study of ChatGPT on grammatical error correction found very fluent output, possibly due to over-correction and not following the principle of minimal edits, and found that it did not effectively fix agreement, coreference and tense errors that run across sentences. So ask for tracked suggestions rather than a rewritten file, leave out reference lists and quotations, and have a person accept every change. Rule-based checkers such as LanguageTool are predictable, but their published language list does not include Hindi.

Rule-based checker or language model
Check
Rule-based checker such as LanguageTool
Language model
Spelling and basic grammar
Predictable. The same text gets the same flags. The core is open source and can run on your own server.
Good, but may rewrite beyond the error.
Style and tone
Limited to the rules written for it.
Flexible. Can follow a house-style instruction.
Consistency across a long document
Weak: names, defined terms and numbers are not its job.
Better, but verify. It can miss a mismatch as well.
Facts and figures
None.
Can compare a summary with a table. Can also be wrong.
Hindi and other Indian languages
LanguageTool’s language list (version 6.6, March 2025) includes Tamil but not Hindi.
Covered unevenly. Have a Hindi reader review.
Repeatability
High.
Lower. The wording of suggestions changes from run to run.
02
Why over-correction matters
Fang and colleagues evaluated ChatGPT on grammatical error correction in 2023. It detected errors well and made sentences very fluent, but they note this was possibly due to over-correction tendencies and not adhering to the principle of minimal edits. At document level it could not effectively correct agreement, coreference and tense errors across sentences. In a business document, fluent but changed can be worse than clumsy but accurate: a proofread must never turn shall into may, move a decimal point or smooth away a deliberate phrase.
IEEE’s author guidance shows the practical rule. If an AI system is used for editing and grammar, exclude the reference section, otherwise the tool may make unwanted changes, and always double-check the result.
03
What a person must still check
Every accepted change. Reject any that alters meaning, however fluent it reads.
Numbers, units, dates and names, which a proofreader should never touch.
Defined terms and legal phrases such as shall, may, subject to and notwithstanding.
Quotations, citations and reference lists, which should be excluded from the pass.
Mixed Hindi and English text, where a tool may flag correct usage as an error or the reverse.
Cross-sentence problems, such as a pronoun that no longer points to the right noun.
04
How an office would set this up
Run the rule-based checker first for spelling and punctuation, because it is predictable.
Give the language model a minimal-edit instruction: list suggested changes with the original text, the change and the reason. Do not return a rewritten file.
Lock the parts that must not change, such as quoted text, clauses and tables of figures.
Compare the result with the original using a text diff and review each difference.
Read the final version aloud or on paper once. Errors that survive screens often show up there.
Keep confidential drafts on your own machines, whichever checker you use.

What ANVE does today
ANVE does not list proofreading as a function. Its research maker, Scholar-Atelier, drafts and revises papers and exports Word or PDF, and its documents function answers questions over the office’s own documents with the source passage shown.
Both run today in ANVE’s development build. No sealed unit exists yet.

Questions people ask
Can AI check Hindi spelling and grammar?
Quality varies by model and language, and LanguageTool’s published language list does not include Hindi. Treat any Hindi check as a first pass and have a Hindi reader review the result.
Will AI change my meaning when it proofreads?
It can. Studies find that language models tend to over-correct rather than make minimal edits. Ask for suggestions with reasons, and reject any that change meaning.
Can AI check that the numbers in a report agree?
It can compare a summary with a table and flag differences, but it can miss some. For critical numbers, add a mechanical check, for example comparing the totals in the table with the totals in the text.
Is it safe to proofread confidential documents with an online tool?
A cloud tool sends your text to its provider. A self-hosted checker or a local model keeps it on your machines. Decide per document, and follow your confidentiality obligations.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
