Can AI transcribe Hinglish correctly?
Mostly right on the words, not yet on the spelling.

Short answer. Partly. Open speech models catch most Hinglish words, but they do not agree on how to write them. Whisper-style models predict a single language label for each 30-second window, so English words can come out in Devanagari and Hindi in Roman letters, and every error rate depends on which spelling the test accepts. On a 2026 Hindi benchmark, every system tested did worse on English words inside Hindi sentences. Models fine-tuned for Hinglish exist and report good results on their own test sets, but the figures vary too widely to compare. Choose a house style first, test on your own meetings, and have a person check names and numbers.

01

Why Hinglish is harder than Hindi or English

Whisper, the open speech model that many Hinglish fine-tunes start from, was trained to predict one language label at the start of each 30-second window. Its authors also left out of the transcription training data any pair in which the spoken language did not match the language of the transcript; English transcripts were kept only as translation examples. That recipe was not designed around mixed-language speech.

Then there is spelling. Hinglish has no standard written form: the same sentence can be typed in Roman letters, in Devanagari, or in a mix. The team behind the Vaani Benchmark notes that current test sets often lack enough code-switched speech or use inconsistent script conventions, so they transcribe code-switched words in both scripts. A model that writes the word for a meeting as मीटिंग may be exactly right and still be marked wrong against a Roman-script reference.

What the published numbers say

Hinglish figures come from different test sets with different spelling rules, so read the table as a set of clues, not a league table.

Source and testResultWhat it tells you
Vaani Benchmark V1.0, English words inside Hindi speech (2026)Every system tested made more substitution errors on English words than on Hindi words: from 12.8% to 28.3% for one open Hindi model, from 10.2% to 12.8% for one cloud service.Code-switching costs accuracy, and some systems lose far less than others.
Tara, a Whisper large-v3 fine-tune with a mixed-script mode (its model card)8.4% word error rate on read Hindi-English sentences and 14.4% on conversational code-switching.The authors’ own figures on two test sets. Hindi comes out in Devanagari and English in Roman letters.
Whisper-Hindi2Hinglish-Prime, a fine-tune that writes spoken Hinglish in Roman letters (its model card)28.7% to 60.8% across three public sets, against 50.8% to 82.6% for base Whisper large-v3 on the same sets. The wide spread shows how much depends on the test set and the spelling rule, not only on the model.

What a person must still check

  • The spelling of English terms and brand names. The same word may appear in two scripts in one transcript.
  • Names of people, places and products, which any speech model tends to guess by sound.
  • Numbers said in a mix of Hindi and English, such as pachas hazaar, fifty thousand or 50K. Agree how amounts are written, and check every figure against the audio.
  • Sentences where the language switches mid-clause, which is where the language-label problem shows up.
  • Lines that were never said or are repeated. The Whisper model card warns about both, especially around silence.
  • Any search you intend to run later. Roman-script and Devanagari versions of the same word will not match unless your search treats them as one.
04

How an office would set this up

  • Decide the house style before you test: Hindi in Devanagari and English in Roman letters, everything in Roman letters, or whatever your readers prefer. Put it on one page with six example sentences.
  • Pick five real recordings, correct a transcript of each by hand in that style, and keep them as your test set.
  • Try a general model such as Whisper large-v3 and one or two Hinglish-aware models, and compare errors by type: names, numbers, English words and Hindi words.
  • Use the prompt where the tool allows it. OpenAI’s speech guide says Whisper takes a prompt of up to 224 tokens, which helps with names, acronyms and punctuation, though Whisper does not follow instructions the way a chat model does.
  • Keep clips short where you can. Tara’s card says it was evaluated on clips of up to 30 seconds and that longer audio should be split.
  • Keep audio and transcripts on the office server, and repeat the test whenever you change the model, the microphone or the room.

What ANVE does today

ANVE’s meeting minutes maker works with transcripts in Hindi, English and Hinglish. Every action item must quote the transcript line it came from, so a reader can check a mixed-language sentence against what was said, and a person confirms the owner before the item is approved. Each confirmation is logged.

This runs today in ANVE’s development build. No sealed unit exists yet, and ANVE publishes no accuracy figures for Hinglish of its own.

Questions people ask

What is Hinglish?
Hindi and English mixed within a conversation or even a sentence, a form of code-switching. It is usually typed in Roman letters and may be printed in Devanagari or a mix. The glossary has a short entry.
Should a Hinglish transcript use Roman letters or Devanagari?
Either can work. What matters is one rule across every transcript, so people and search tools see the same spelling. Some models output a mixed form, with Hindi in Devanagari and English in Roman letters; others output only Roman letters.
Can I give the model a list of names and terms?
Partly. OpenAI’s speech-to-text guide says Whisper accepts a prompt of up to 224 tokens that helps with names, acronyms and spellings. It will not follow instructions the way a chat model does.
Does ANVE handle Hinglish?
ANVE’s meeting minutes maker works with transcripts in Hindi, English and Hinglish. It runs in the development build today; no sealed unit exists yet.
