Does local AI run on Linux or Windows? Which tools run on which system, and where the GPU drivers differ.
Short answer. Both, and macOS too, with one catch. Ollama runs natively on Windows, Linux and macOS, llama.cpp and ComfyUI are cross-platform, and vLLM requires Linux (on Windows it runs through WSL, the Windows Subsystem for Linux). The catch is GPU support, which differs by system: Ollama lists AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 for its ROCm route on Linux, while on Windows its ROCm list names Radeon RX and PRO cards and Vulkan is the other route for AMD graphics, and Apple silicon needs macOS. A headless shared server suits Linux, where Ollama documents a systemd service; Windows suits teams that already manage Windows machines.

What runs where
These come from each project’s own documentation as of October 2026. If a row matters to you, read the current page, since releases change quickly.
Software

Linux
macOS
Ollama
Native app on Windows 10 22H2 or newer; NVIDIA driver 551.61 or newer; AMD through ROCm v7 or Vulkan
Install script; a systemd startup service is recommended; ROCm v7 for AMD
Yes, with Metal
llama.cpp
Package through winget and pre-built binaries
Pre-built binaries and a Docker image
Yes; Apple silicon is a first-class target
vLLM
Not natively; use WSL or a community fork
The supported system (Python 3.10 to 3.13)
Apple silicon through a separate plugin, and a CPU backend
ComfyUI (images)
Desktop app on Windows 10 or later; NVIDIA or AMD GPU recommended
AppImage, .deb or source
Apple silicon
faster-whisper (speech)
Yes; NVIDIA libraries available as an archive
Yes; NVIDIA libraries installable with pip
Not covered by its README

Where the GPU matters more than the system
Support for an exact chip changes from one release to the next. Before you buy, check the runtime’s hardware page for your chip, not just its family. Apple silicon runs macOS only, so it appears in the macOS column above.
Hardware
On Windows
On Linux
NVIDIA GeForce and RTX PRO cards
CUDA; Ollama needs driver 551.61 or newer
CUDA; Ollama needs driver 550 or newer
AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395
Windows 11 supported by AMD; AMD documents up to 96 GB of a 128 GB machine as graphics memory; Ollama’s Windows ROCm list names Radeon RX and PRO cards, with Vulkan as the other AMD route
Ubuntu and RHEL supported by AMD; Ollama lists it for ROCm v7

How to choose
A headless server shared by many people: Linux is the better fit for vLLM, containers and remote administration. Ollama’s Linux install documents a startup service.
An office whose IT team runs only Windows, with a few users: Windows with Ollama works, with the driver versions above.
A Mac Studio: macOS, with Ollama, llama.cpp or similar, using Metal.
Whoever administers it matters as much as the system: pick the one that person already knows.

Where ANVE fits
ANVE’s launch tiers use AMD Strix Halo-class and NVIDIA hardware, the two families in the table. ANVE is an appliance: ANVEAI installs updates on site today, signed offline USB update packages are not on ANVE yet, and ANVE does not update itself over the internet (see the security page). The software runs today on a development machine; no sealed unit exists yet.

Questions people ask
Is Linux faster than Windows for local AI?
No comparison was found in the sources used here, so no figure is given. Driver and runtime support differ by system, and the same hardware can behave differently on each, so test if it matters.
Can I run vLLM on Windows?
Not natively. Its documentation says to use WSL, the Windows Subsystem for Linux, or a community-maintained fork.
Does a Mac need special software?
Apple silicon uses Metal, which Ollama and llama.cpp support. vLLM lists Apple silicon through a separate plugin.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
