Where does ChatGPT store my data? Storage, processing and abuse logs can sit in three different places.
Short answer. For individual plans, OpenAI says it processes and stores data on servers in various countries, including the United States, and its help pages describe no regional choice. For business plans it depends on the plan. New ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers can keep content at rest in one of ten regions, including India, at no extra cost, but model inference runs in-region only in Europe, the United States and the UAE, so prompts from India are processed elsewhere. ChatGPT Business offers a storage region at checkout where it has rolled out, but safety and abuse-monitoring logs stay in the United States, including a copy of every prompt and response for a limited time.

What residency covers and what it does not
In scope when data residency is on: conversations (text, image and voice), memory, files, custom GPTs, Code Interpreter artifacts, image-generation inputs and outputs, and backups and replicas.
May sit outside the region: workspace name and metadata, billing information, user logins, transient processing, and data sent to connected apps, MCP servers or web search.
Inference residency keeps GPU execution in-region where it is offered. CPU work, such as extracting text from PDF and Word uploads, plus routing, authentication and analytics, may happen elsewhere.
Third-party GPTs and features that are not generally available are not eligible.

Legal holds and deletion
Deletion is not always final. OpenAI’s policies allow longer retention for security or legal reasons. In 2025 a US court order in The New York Times’ lawsuit required OpenAI to keep consumer ChatGPT and API content, including deleted chats, until the obligation ended on 26 September 2025. OpenAI said Enterprise and Edu workspaces and zero-data-retention API customers were excluded, and that it would keep limited April to September 2025 data under a legal hold.

Why the location matters in India
Whether data stored or processed abroad is acceptable depends on your sector rules, client contracts and the law. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 keeps a data fiduciary responsible for processing done on its behalf (section 8(1)), and the detailed rules on security safeguards and breach notice start eighteen months after 13 November 2025. If the answer must be “in the building”
A private system keeps both storage and processing on your own device. ANVE keeps everything in one database on the box, and full-disk encryption and secure boot are part of the appliance image, which is not on ANVE yet. Cloud models are optional, added by an administrator, and their answers are labelled. ANVE is pre-release, and the software runs today on a development machine.

Questions people ask
Can I choose India for ChatGPT data?
On Enterprise and Edu, yes, for storage at rest: OpenAI lists India among ten regions. Inference residency is not offered in India as of 7 October 2026.
Does deleting a chat remove it immediately?
It disappears from your account at once and is scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, unless it was already de-identified or must be kept for security or legal reasons.
Where are ChatGPT Business abuse logs kept?
In the United States, whatever storage region you pick. If you choose a region outside the United States, a copy of every prompt and response is also stored there for a limited time.
Is data stored in India also processed in India?
Not for ChatGPT as of October 2026, because storage and inference are separate promises. Microsoft draws the same line for Copilot and says local inferencing in India is expected by the end of 2026.

What is not real yet
