Is Microsoft 365 Copilot data stored in India? Storage and processing are separate promises, and Microsoft treats them differently.
Short answer. Yes for storage, not yet for processing. Microsoft documents that the content of Copilot interactions (prompts and responses) and the related semantic index are stored at rest in the tenant’s local region geography, and India is one of those geographies, with firmer commitments under the paid Advanced Data Residency and Multi-Geo add-ons. But the model processing may run in the US, the EU or other regions, and Microsoft’s April 2026 update says local inferencing in India is expected by the end of 2026. Microsoft also says prompts, responses and Graph data are not used to train its foundation models. Microsoft 365 Copilot is being renamed Microsoft Copilot.

Stored versus processed
Question
What Microsoft documents
For an India tenant, October 2026
Prompts and responses at rest
Stored at rest in the relevant local region geography, together with the related semantic index
India is a listed local region geography
Strength of the commitment
Product Terms commit for tenants with a listed sign-up country, India included; the Advanced Data Residency and Multi-Geo add-ons add durable commitments
Advanced Data Residency needs licences for 100% of the tenant’s paid seats; Multi-Geo needs licences for at least 5% of eligible users
Where the model runs
Customers outside the EU may have queries processed in the US, EU or other regions; calls go to the closest data centres but can use other regions when capacity is tight
Not in India yet
In-country processing
Local data inferencing expected in Australia, India, the UAE, the UK and the US by the end of 2026 (editor’s note, 3 April 2026)
Expected, not delivered as of this check
Training on your data
Prompts, responses and data accessed through Microsoft Graph are not used to train foundation LLMs
Applies in every region
Web search
When used, Copilot sends a generated search query to the Bing Search service
Covered by separate web-query documentation
02
What “stored in India” means in practice
Your tenant’s default geography follows the sign-up country. Microsoft’s documentation lists India among the sign-up countries for the Product Terms commitment, and among the Local Region Geographies for Advanced Data Residency. Advanced Data Residency is a paid add-on that needs licences for every paid seat in the tenant. Multi-Geo lets you place some users’ data in other geographies and is not available to small business or education subscriptions.
03
What to check before you rely on it
Your tenant’s data location in the Microsoft 365 admin center, which shows where each service stores data.
Whether Advanced Data Residency or Multi-Geo is bought, because without them the commitment is the baseline in the Product Terms.
Which third-party models are switched on. Admins decide whether Copilot may use models from Anthropic and OpenAI, and additional terms may apply.
Which Copilot staff actually use. These pages cover work accounts. Microsoft’s own shadow-AI guide lists the consumer version of Microsoft Copilot among the consumer AI applications that an organisation may want to block sensitive prompts to.
Web search, agents and Graph connectors, which have their own privacy terms.
Retention: admins can set Purview retention policies for Copilot interactions, and users can delete their own activity history.
04
When Copilot is the right call
If your organisation already runs on Microsoft 365, Copilot works inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams and surfaces only content a user has permission to see. Many offices will find cloud processing acceptable on these commitments. If your rules say records must not be processed outside the building, a local system is the alternative. ANVE runs its models on a device in the office; it is pre-release.

Questions people ask
Is Copilot data used to train Microsoft’s models?
Microsoft’s documentation says prompts, responses and data accessed through Microsoft Graph are not used to train foundation LLMs, including those used by Copilot.
Does Copilot show files a user cannot open?
Microsoft says Copilot only surfaces organisational data to which the individual user has at least view permission, so permissions in SharePoint and similar services matter.
What is the difference between Advanced Data Residency and Multi-Geo?
Advanced Data Residency commits to storing data in the local country geography and needs licences for 100% of a tenant’s paid seats. Multi-Geo places chosen users’ data in other geographies and needs licences for at least 5% of eligible users. Small business and education subscriptions do not qualify for Multi-Geo.
Is it still called Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Microsoft’s Learn pages say Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot, with some licences and capabilities still using the old name during the transition, and no change to security, compliance and privacy.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
