Can I run a useful AI model on a laptop? Yes, for one person. An office needs more than a laptop.
Short answer. Yes, for one person. A recent laptop with 16 GB or more of memory can run a 4B to 8B model, such as Qwen3 4B (a 2.5 GB download) or Qwen3 8B (5.2 GB), for summaries, drafting and questions about a few documents, and Google DeepMind designed the smaller Gemma 4 models for local execution on laptops and mobile devices. A 27B-class model needs 17 GB for the weights alone and answers slowly on typical laptop memory. A laptop also gives an office no shared accounts, no audit trail and no continuity when it is closed or lost, so it suits an individual, not a team.

What fits
LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more of RAM on Apple silicon and on Windows, and says smaller models may run on 8 GB with reduced context. The speed ceilings below assume dual-channel DDR5 at 89.6 GB/s and are arithmetic, not benchmarks; memory bandwidth sets the pace of text generation.

Good for
Qwen3 4B
2.5 GB
about 36 tokens a second
Short summaries, extraction, first drafts
Qwen3 8B
5.2 GB
about 17 tokens a second
Everyday drafting and questions
Gemma 3 12B
8.1 GB
about 11 tokens a second
Better quality at lower speed
Gemma 3 27B
17 GB
about 5 tokens a second
The highest quality of the four, but slow on laptop memory

What a small model does well
Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 card lists text generation, chatbots, text summarisation and image data extraction among the intended uses and describes its smaller models as designed for efficient local execution on laptops and mobile devices. The same card shows the trade-off: the 4.5B-effective E4B scores 69.4% on MMLU Pro against 85.2% for the 31B, so expect weaker results on hard reasoning and long documents.
03
What a laptop cannot give an office
Shared accounts and roles. A laptop serves the person at the keyboard.
An audit trail of who asked what.
Many users at once: Ollama processes one request per model at a time by default.
Continuity. The model is unavailable when the lid is closed, and a lost laptop takes its files with it, so client material needs full-disk encryption and a loss plan.
Managed updates. Local runtimes need patches; Wiz reported over 1,000 internet-exposed Ollama servers when it disclosed a code-execution flaw in 2024.
04
Getting started safely
Install Ollama or LM Studio from the vendor’s own site.
Keep the server on the laptop only. Ollama binds to 127.0.0.1 by default.
Check which model you selected. Ollama’s library lists cloud variants, for example gemma4:cloud, alongside local ones, and a cloud variant sends your prompts to a hosted service.
Try a small set of real tasks before you trust a model with more.
Keep client files off personal laptops unless your policy allows it.

Where ANVE fits
ANVE ran its published minutes test on a laptop, an Apple M3 Pro through Ollama, and says in its note that laptop speed says nothing about the speed of its own hardware. The software runs today on a development machine; no sealed unit exists. A laptop is the right tool for one technical person, as the note on why ANVE is not selling you a computer says.

Questions people ask
How much RAM do I need to run a local model?
LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more on Apple silicon and Windows, with smaller models possible on 8 GB at reduced context. The model file is the minimum: Qwen3 8B is 5.2 GB, and you need room for the conversation and the system on top.
Do I need a gaming laptop?
No. llama.cpp runs on CPUs and on Apple silicon through Metal, and uses a GPU where one is present. A GPU speeds things up and lets bigger models fit, but it is not required.
Is a model on my laptop private?
The model runs locally, so prompts do not go to a vendor, provided the tool is not set to a cloud model. Ollama’s library lists cloud variants next to local ones, so check what you picked.
Can staff use laptop models for client work?
Technically yes. Whether it is wise depends on your policy: a laptop has no audit trail, and a lost unencrypted laptop exposes the files. See the pages on policy and record-keeping.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
