Hinglish
The everyday mix of Hindi and English, and what it does to transcription.

Short answer. Hinglish is the everyday mixing of Hindi and English, often within one sentence, as in “kal ka board meeting 11 baje hai” (tomorrow’s board meeting is at 11). Researchers treat it as a form of code-switching, and one survey notes that people in India also mix English with other languages, giving Tenglish and Tamlish. Typed in Roman script it has no standard spelling: one study lists mujhe, mjhe and mujhee as variants of one word. For AI this breaks assumptions. A speech model must choose a script and a language word by word, and an accuracy score must decide whether “meeting” and “मीटिंग” count as the same word.

The same sentence three ways

All three mean “Sir, tomorrow’s board meeting is at 11.”

FormExampleComment
Roman scriptSir, kal ka board meeting 11 baje hai.How most people type it; spelling varies from person to person
Devanagari with English wordsसर, कल का board meeting 11 बजे है।Two scripts in one line
Devanagari throughoutसर, कल की बोर्ड बैठक 11 बजे है।Formal Hindi; “meeting” becomes बैठक
02

Why it is hard for AI

  • Spelling: Roman Hindi has no standard. The PHINC corpus paper gives mujhe, mjhe and mujhee as variants of the Hindi for “me”.
  • Script: in the MUCS 2021 challenge data, the same English word appeared in both Latin and native script, so a system’s output could be right in either.
  • Switching: the language can change mid-sentence, while many models are trained on one language at a time.
  • Data: code-switched data is scarce. PHINC has 13,738 sentences, and the GLUECoS benchmark covers English-Hindi and English-Spanish.
  • Variety: the survey notes casual conversational Hinglish differs from film Hinglish, which differs from Hinglish on Twitter.
  • Evidence: neither OpenAI’s Whisper paper nor its model cards report a code-switching test.

What the research reports

The three research sets below are built from lectures and social media, not boardrooms. Treat their numbers as a warning about difficulty, not a forecast for your office.

What to do in an office

  • Decide the transcript script before you start: Roman, Devanagari or a mix, and tell reviewers.
  • Keep a glossary of names, places and terms, with the spelling you want.
  • Score tests with a script-tolerant rule, as MUCS did, so a correct word in either script is not penalised.
  • Have a bilingual reviewer check anything that will be signed or acted on.
  • Ask any vendor for results on Hinglish speech like yours, not only on English or on Hindi read aloud.

Where ANVE stands

ANVE’s minutes maker produces transcripts in Hindi, English and Hinglish on the office device. Every action item must quote the transcript line it came from, so a reviewer can compare a doubtful line with what was said, and a person confirms each owner before it is approved.

Questions people ask

Is Hinglish a language?
Researchers describe it as code-switching between Hindi and English. The survey notes there may one day be a standardised Hinglish, but for now such mixed varieties are very dynamic and differ from speaker to speaker.
Can AI transcribe Hinglish?
Sometimes, with errors that depend on script choice, accent and noise. The MUCS 2021 baselines scored about 32% word error rate on code-switched test sets drawn from lectures. Test your own meetings; our question page covers it.
Should transcripts be in Roman or Devanagari?
Pick one rule and apply it everywhere. Search and spell-check work per script, and a mixed transcript is harder to match against a glossary.
Is code-mixing the same as code-switching?
The terms overlap. The survey uses code-switching and notes that code-mixing is also used.
