Code-switching Why bilingual speakers mix languages, and what it does to speech software.
Short answer. Code-switching is the alternation between two or more languages within one conversation or sentence. Sitaram and colleagues define it as a shift from one language to another within a single utterance, and note that some form of it is expected in almost every setting that involves multilingual speakers. It is common in India, where people mix Hindi and English, and it also appears in semi-formal settings such as teaching and newspaper headlines. For speech and language software it is hard because training data is scarce, spelling and script vary, and a model must handle two languages at once.
01
Types of switching
The MUCS 2021 organisers describe code-switching as languages freely interchanged within a single sentence or between sentences. The survey adds that switching and borrowing are not always clearly distinguishable.
Pattern
Example (Hindi and English)
Note
Between sentences
Meeting khatam ho gayi. Please send the minutes.
Each sentence stays in one language
Within a sentence
Minutes kal tak bhej dena, please.
The hardest case for software
Borrowed word
Station kahan hai?
English words that have entered everyday Hindi; hard to tell from switching
02
Why people do it
The survey says code-switching conveys group identity, reflects patterns in society and signals cultural discourse strategies, and has been shown to reduce social and interpersonal distance in both formal and informal settings. It is most common among peers with similar fluency in each language. In other words, a bilingual office will do it in meetings whatever the policy says.
03
Why it is hard for AI
Data is scarce: the survey says code-switching data and resources are scarce and lists what exists, and the MUCS 2021 organisers say large code-switched corpora are lacking.
Script and spelling vary. Where the two languages use different scripts, writers may use one script for both or mix scripts, and script choice can signal emphasis or whether a word is borrowed.
Borrowed and switched words are often transcribed inconsistently, so the same word may appear in both languages’ spellings.
The survey reports work showing that speech recognition models fine-tuned on code-switched data can get worse on single-language speech.
Scoring needs care: MUCS 2021 added a transliterated word error rate so that an English word counts as right in Latin or native script.
04
What an office can do
Record in the language mix people actually use, rather than asking them to speak one language.
Give the tool a list of names, places and terms, and agree a transcript style.
Test on your own meetings, not on read-aloud sentences.
Have a bilingual reviewer sign off anything that will be acted on or signed.
Keep the audio for as long as policy and consent allow, so a disputed line can be checked.
05
Where ANVE stands
ANVE’s minutes maker produces transcripts in Hindi, English and Hinglish, and keeps every action item tied to the transcript line it came from.
06
Questions people ask
Is code-switching the same as translation?
No. Translation turns text from one language into another. Code-switching is a speaker using more than one language in the same conversation or sentence.
Does code-switching mean the speaker is not fluent?
No. The survey says it is most common among peers who have similar fluency in each language.
How does it affect meeting minutes?
Mixed-language lines are harder for speech tools, so check names, numbers and decisions against the audio before approving minutes.
What is the difference between code-switching and code-mixing?
The terms overlap. The survey uses code-switching and notes that code-mixing is also used.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
