Can AI translate documents offline? Yes. Choose by licence and language, and have a reader check the result.
Short answer. Yes. Open translation models run offline once downloaded. AI4Bharat’s IndicTrans2 is MIT-licensed and covers all 22 scheduled Indian languages; Argos Translate, also MIT-licensed, is an offline library with downloadable language packs; and general models such as Gemma 3 (140+ languages), Qwen3 (119) and Llama 3.3 (Hindi among eight) can translate in a chat. Check licences: Meta’s NLLB-200 is non-commercial, and its card calls it a research model not released for production deployment and not intended for document translation. Layout, such as tables, headers and stamps, is a separate problem from words, and legal, medical or contractual translations need a qualified human reviewer.

Licences are as stated in each project’s repository or model card in October 2026. Check them again before you rely on one.

Worth knowing
IndicTrans2, AI4Bharat
All 22 scheduled Indian languages, with English
MIT
Released with a corpus of 230 million sentence pairs and the first benchmark of its kind covering all 22 languages. Its README uses the chrF++ score as its main metric.
Argos Translate
Language packs for many pairs
MIT
An open-source offline library built on OpenNMT. LibreTranslate, an API and web app, builds on it. It can also translate files.
NLLB-200 distilled, Meta
200 languages
CC-BY-NC 4.0
Non-commercial. The card says it is a research model not released for production deployment, and not intended for document translation or for medical or legal text.
General language models: Gemma 3, Qwen3, Llama 3.3
140+, 119 and eight languages (Hindi included in the last two lists)
Gemma terms, Apache 2.0 and the Llama 3.3 Community Licence
They follow instructions, such as keep the terms in this glossary. Quality varies by language pair, so test.
02
Words are not layout
Scanned documents need OCR first, and OCR mistakes become translation mistakes.
Tables, headers, footers, text boxes and stamps are not plain text. A tool that translates sentences will not rebuild the page for you.
Indic scripts and right-to-left scripts such as Urdu need fonts and layout that the target document supports.
Names of people and places, numbers and dates need consistent spelling and format across the document.
Specialist vocabulary needs a glossary, which general models can be told to follow.
03
What a person must still check
Meaning of key terms in legal, medical and technical text, by a reader who knows both languages.
Numbers, dates and names against the source.
Negations and conditions, where one small word reverses the meaning.
Completeness: compare the paragraph and table counts of source and translation, since a model can skip text.
Register and tone. A formal notice should not read like a chat message.
Anything that will be filed, signed or sent to a client.
04
How an office would set this up
List the language pairs you need and the document types, for example Hindi to English for circulars.
Build a glossary of 50 to 100 terms with their approved translations.
Run IndicTrans2 and one general model on ten real pages and have a bilingual colleague mark errors on both.
Pick on quality and on licence. A non-commercial licence rules a model out for client work.
Keep the original and the translation together, with the model name, the date and the reviewer.
Label machine-translated documents as such when you share them.

What ANVE does today
ANVE lists no translation function. Its meeting minutes maker works with transcripts in Hindi, English and Hinglish, which is not translation, and ANVE publishes no translation quality figures. If you need offline translation today, the open options above can be run on your own hardware.

Questions people ask
Which model is best for Hindi to English?
There is no single answer. Test IndicTrans2 and one general model on your own documents with a bilingual reviewer, and weigh the licence as well as the quality.
Can I translate a scanned document offline?
Yes, after OCR. Run OCR first, check the text, then translate. Errors in the OCR pass through to the translation.
Is machine translation good enough for legal documents?
Not on its own. NLLB-200’s card says it is not intended for medical or legal text. For anything filed or signed, a qualified human must review the translation.
Does translation need an internet connection?
Not once the model files are on your machine. IndicTrans2 can be run locally, and Argos Translate describes itself as an offline translation library.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
