Does private AI work with Microsoft Office files? Yes for modern formats. Old formats, macros and fonts need care.
Short answer. Yes. Modern Microsoft Office files (DOCX, PPTX, XLSX) follow the open Office Open XML standard, published as ECMA-376 and ISO/IEC 29500, and are ZIP packages of XML. That is why libraries such as python-docx and python-pptx can create and update them, and python-pptx needs no copy of PowerPoint installed, so a private AI can write documents and decks that open in Word and PowerPoint. ANVE exports PPTX, PDF and DOCX, and its exports open in Microsoft Office. The catches are legacy binary formats such as .doc, .ppt and .xls, macros, password-protected files, and layout details such as fonts, which Hindi text makes obvious.

What a private AI can do with each format
Format
What the documentation says
Watch for
DOCX (Word)
Open Office Open XML. python-docx creates and updates .docx files.
Tracked changes and comments, styles, headers and footers.
PPTX (PowerPoint)
Open Office Open XML. python-pptx creates, reads and updates .pptx files, adds slides, fills text placeholders, and adds pictures, tables and charts, with no PowerPoint installed.
Fonts, animations and layouts in templates.
XLSX (Excel)
Open Office Open XML. Document converters such as Docling list XLSX among the formats they parse.
Formulas, linked workbooks and hidden sheets.
DOC, PPT, XLS (legacy)
Older binary formats. Google, for one, treats them differently from DOCX, PPTX and XLSX for some features.
Convert to the modern format first, and check the result.
PDF
Not an Office format. Used for hand-over.
A scanned PDF needs OCR before an AI can read it.
02
What a careful system does to your files
It leaves the original untouched and writes a new file or a new version.
It keeps tracked changes and comments visible, so a reviewer sees what the AI altered.
It records which model made the draft and when, in the file properties or the file name.
It treats macros as code. A macro-enabled file should not be opened by an automated pipeline without a security check.
It reads hidden text, comments and metadata with care, because they can carry instructions. OWASP lists hidden text in documents as a way to mislead a retrieval system.
03
What a person must still check
Fonts, especially Devanagari. A file that looks right on the machine that made it can fall back to a different font elsewhere.
Tables: column widths, merged cells and page breaks after the AI has edited the text.
Page numbers, headers, footers and cross-references in long documents.
Comments and tracked changes before a file goes to a client.
Properties and metadata, which may include names, paths and earlier drafts.
04
How an office would set this up
Standardise on DOCX, PPTX and XLSX, and convert old files once.
Give the AI your templates so output uses your styles and master slides.
Test one real document and one real deck on the machines people use, including a Hindi page.
Keep AI output in a draft folder until a person has opened and approved the file.
Strip metadata and remove comments before external circulation.
Keep a note of which tool and model produced each file.

What ANVE does today
ANVE’s presentation maker, Vellum, exports PPTX, PDF or DOCX, and its research maker, Scholar-Atelier, exports Word or PDF. ANVE says its exports open in Microsoft Office as well as Google Slides and Docs and Zoho Show and Writer. ANVE has not published which Office file types the documents function accepts as input, so get that in writing before a paid pilot.
The exports run today in ANVE’s development build. No sealed unit exists yet.

Questions people ask
Can the AI edit my existing Word file and keep the formatting?
Libraries can update a .docx in place, but a model that rewrites text can disturb formatting. Work on a copy, keep tracked changes on, and compare the result with the original before it goes anywhere.
Does the AI need Microsoft 365?
No. The python-pptx documentation says it does not require the PowerPoint application to be installed or licensed. You still need Office, or another compatible application, to open and review the files.
What about old .doc and .xls files?
Convert them to DOCX or XLSX first and check the conversion. Legacy binary formats are handled differently from modern ones by many tools.
Is it safe to feed Office files to an AI?
Treat macros, hidden text and embedded content as untrusted. Remove macros, review comments and metadata, and keep the AI’s powers narrow so a hidden instruction cannot make it act.
