Could a vendor switch off an office AI remotely? Only if the box depends on the vendor to keep working, so find those dependencies.
Short answer. Only if the box depends on the vendor to keep working. That means an online licence check, a cloud service the product relies on, or remote management that can change or disable it. A device with none of those keeps running if the vendor disappears, though it loses updates and support. Before you buy, ask what the box needs from the vendor each day, what happens when it cannot reach the vendor, and whether the vendor can disable anything remotely. Then test it by blocking the vendor’s addresses for a week in the pilot. Ask for the answers in the contract, not only on a web page.
01
Five dependencies that can stop a box
Dependency
If the vendor goes quiet
Question to ask
Online licence check
The box may stop, or run for a grace period and then stop
Is the licence perpetual and valid offline? What is the grace period?
A cloud service the product calls
Features that need it stop; the rest keeps working
Which features need it? Is there a local alternative?
Remote management or a kill switch
The vendor can change or disable the box on its own initiative
Does one exist? Who can trigger it? Can we disable it?
Update and support channel
The box keeps working but stops receiving fixes
How long is each release supported? Who supplies security fixes?
Components fetched on demand
Anything pulled from the vendor when needed stops
Are all models and software already on the box?
02
Three different events
People mix up three things. A switch-off means the box stops working. An end of updates means it works but ages. An end of support means nobody fixes it. A product can be safe from the first and still carry risk from the other two, so ask about each.
The glossary entries on the remote kill switch and the offline licence define the first and the usual way around it.
03
Tests you can run in a pilot
Block all of the vendor’s domains at the firewall for a week and note what changes.
Put one question to the vendor in writing: is there any way you can disable or degrade our box?
Ask to see the licence terms and what the box does on the expiry date.
Ask for the list of outbound connections and compare it with your firewall log.
Ask what happens if a payment is late.
04
Terms to write into the contract
A perpetual licence for the software delivered with the unit, if that is what you are buying, stated plainly.
Either a statement that no remote disable exists, or exactly when it may be used and with what notice.
Notice before support ends, with a minimum period.
Source or binary escrow if the product is critical to your work.
A refund or transition path if the vendor withdraws the product.
Export and deletion of your data on exit.
05
Why plan for it
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework asks for contingency processes to handle failures or incidents in third-party data or AI systems, and its generative AI profile suggests incident response plans for third-party AI technologies. A vendor that can switch you off, or that might disappear, is a third-party dependency. NIST’s contingency planning guide also says a vendor agreement should specify how quickly the vendor must respond when you need emergency service.

What ANVE says
ANVE is pre-release: no sealed unit exists, there are no customers yet and the final price is not announced. The published position is that there is no remote kill switch, every order includes a perpetual licence for the software delivered with the unit, and the box keeps working if ANVEAI shuts down (see /security). ANVE also does not update itself over the internet: today ANVEAI installs updates on site, and signed update packages applied offline by USB are not on ANVE yet.
A reservation (₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere) is refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing, and the pre-booking terms page sets out the terms.
07
Questions people ask
Is a kill switch ever legitimate?
A vendor may want one to disable stolen or fraudulently obtained units. It is a design choice with a cost, because it is also a way to switch off a paying customer. Ask who can trigger it, under what rules and how you would be told.
What if the vendor goes bankrupt?
Then licences, updates and support depend on what the contract says about perpetual rights and escrow. See the question on a vendor shutting down.
Does an offline box need a licence server?
Not necessarily. An offline licence can be a signed file checked on the box. Ask whether the product supports one and how renewal works.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
