Does private AI keep working in a power cut? Only as long as the box, the network and the people’s devices have power.
Short answer. Not without backup power. The box, the network switch and router, and the staff’s own devices all need electricity, so a power cut stops the service unless they are covered. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) bridges short cuts and gives time to shut down cleanly; a generator or inverter circuit covers long ones. Size the UPS to the real load: APC advises staying under 80% of its rated capacity and says most of its batteries last three to five years. Databases are built to survive sudden power loss, but not every drive honours cache-flush requests, so a clean shutdown is still much safer than an abrupt stop.
01
What needs power
The AI box itself.
The switch and router between users and the box. Without them nobody can reach it, even if the box is running.
Wi-Fi access points, if staff connect that way.
The UPS’s own monitoring link to the box, so the box knows when to shut down.
Staff computers. Laptops have a battery; desktops do not.
A screen or console, if you need to see what the box is doing.

03
Sizing in five steps
Get the box’s peak and idle power draw in watts from the maker. ANVE has not published these.
Add the switch, router and anything else on the same UPS.
Keep the total under 80% of the UPS rating, as APC recommends.
Choose the runtime for the outage you want to ride through, or for a clean shutdown if the outage is long.
Replace the battery on schedule. APC says most batteries last three to five years, and that every 8°C rise in temperature cuts battery life in half, with 20 to 25°C the optimal range for a lead-acid battery.
04
Clean shutdown and restart
Network UPS Tools includes a monitor called upsmon whose job is to shut the system down when the power goes out. When the UPS reports that it is on battery and the battery is low, it runs the shutdown command. Its manual warns that systems must shut down before the shared power source is turned off, or filesystem damage may result. Set the trigger so the box shuts down with battery to spare.
Then decide about restart. Should the box start itself when mains returns? If disk encryption needs a person to type a passphrase, an unattended restart will wait at the prompt. See the question on theft for that trade-off. Test both by pulling the mains plug at a quiet time.
05
What the databases do
PostgreSQL’s documentation says data from a committed transaction should be on a nonvolatile area that is safe from power loss. It warns that caches in disk controllers and drives are a hazard: consumer SATA drives and many SSDs have volatile write-back caches, and many SSDs do not honour cache-flush commands by default. SQLite says that if a power failure happens in the middle of a transaction, the partly written transaction should roll back automatically the next time the file is opened. It adds that SQLite is not immune to corruption, for example from flash controllers that are not power-safe.
In short, modern databases cope with an unclean stop most of the time, but the hardware under them has to behave. That is the case for a UPS even when the software is careful. NIST’s server guide asks the same question of any server location: is there a backup power source, and for how long will it provide power?

What ANVE says
ANVE has not published power figures for its launch units, and no sealed unit exists yet. Ask for the peak and idle draw in watts, the supported UPS-monitoring method, whether the box restarts on its own when mains returns and whether a clean shutdown can be triggered automatically. ANVEAI confirms these in writing before a paid pilot.
07
Questions people ask
How big a UPS do we need?
Size it to the real load of everything on it, with headroom: APC advises not exceeding 80% of rated capacity. You need the box’s power draw in watts, which you should ask the maker for.
How long should the UPS keep the box running?
For a clean shutdown, a few minutes of runtime may be enough. To keep working through an outage you need a larger system. Log your own outages for a month before deciding.
Do we need a generator?
Only if your outages are long and frequent enough to justify it. Measure first, then decide.
