Can an AI voice agent answer calls in Hindi?
Yes for simple, well-defined calls. Phone audio and delay are the hard parts.

Short answer. Yes, for narrow, well-defined calls, and with care for phone audio. A voice agent chains three models: speech-to-text, a language model that decides the reply, and text-to-speech. Open Hindi options exist for each, and open frameworks such as LiveKit Agents and Pipecat connect them. The hard parts are phone audio, which Twilio’s media streams deliver at 8 kHz, and accuracy on spontaneous Hindi: the open Whisper-large-v3 scored a 32.8 per cent word error rate on a 2026 Hindi benchmark. Keep the scope small, hand over to a person quickly, and tell callers it is an AI. ANVE’s voice front desk is built with a paid pilot on AnveVoice; it is not a shipped product.

Why phone calls are harder than meetings

Twilio’s documentation says its media streams carry audio that is always 8,000 Hz mu-law, one channel, which is lower than the 16 kHz audio that Whisper, for one, resamples everything to. The Gram Vaani challenge, published at Interspeech 2022, is built on 1,108 hours of real, spontaneous telephone speech in regional variations of Hindi. Its baseline systems, a conventional model trained on 100 labelled hours and a neural conformer model, reached word error rates of 29.7 and 32.9 per cent. Those are 2022 baselines, not today’s best systems, so test current models on your own calls.

Callers also mix Hindi and English, give names and numbers, interrupt, and call from noisy places. Each adds errors, and the delay of three steps in a row adds up. An agent that replies late or talks over the caller feels broken even when its answers are right.

What to design in, and what to check

  • Hand over to a person quickly: on request, after two misunderstandings, and for anything about money, health or complaints.
  • Read back names, numbers and dates before acting on them.
  • Say at the start that it is an AI, and say if the call is recorded.
  • Restrict the agent to a short list of call types, such as opening hours, appointment changes and status checks.
  • Log every call and review a sample each week for wrong answers and missed handovers.
  • Test with real callers on real phones in noisy places, not with studio recordings.
04

How an office would set this up

  • Write down the ten calls you want it to handle, and the answer to each, from approved documents.
  • Connect your telephony provider to an open framework such as LiveKit Agents (Apache 2.0) or Pipecat (BSD-2-Clause).
  • Pick a speech model by testing 50 recorded calls and counting errors on names and numbers.
  • Run it on an after-hours line first, with a person reviewing the log the next morning.
  • Add a clear fallback to a human voicemail or call-back when the agent is unsure.
  • Widen the scope only after a month of reviewed calls with few errors.

What ANVE does today

A voice front desk that answers callers in Hindi or English, built on AnveVoice, is one of the agents ANVE can build with a paid pilot. The pilot fee is agreed in writing before installation. It is not a shipped product. In ANVE the tools an agent can use must be approved by an administrator, a tool that changes is switched off, and every tool call is logged.

ANVE comes from the makers of AnveVoice, a voice AI for websites whose replies start a median 487 milliseconds after a caller stops speaking, measured end to end. That is AnveVoice’s figure for websites; ANVE publishes no speed figure for its own hardware.

06

Questions people ask

How fast does a voice agent need to reply?
Delay is the sum of speech recognition, the model’s thinking and speech synthesis, so each step must be quick. AnveVoice, the team’s voice AI for websites, reports a median of 487 milliseconds from the end of speech to the start of the reply, measured end to end.
Can it handle callers who mix Hindi and English?
Partly. Mixed speech raises errors and creates spelling choices. The Hinglish question has numbers and a checklist. Test with your own callers.
Should callers be told it is an AI?
Yes. Say so at the start, say if the call is recorded, and let callers ask for a person at any time.
Can an AI voice agent take payments or give medical advice?
Keep those out of scope. Hand over to a person for money, health and complaints, because a wrong answer there costs far more than a longer queue.

What is not real yet

No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.

Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
