How is private AI different from ChatGPT Enterprise? Contract-based protection in someone else’s cloud, or processing in your own building.
Short answer. ChatGPT Enterprise protects business data with contract terms and admin controls, but the processing still happens in OpenAI’s cloud. Private AI runs the model on hardware you control, so prompts and files stay on your network. OpenAI says it does not train on Enterprise data by default, lets administrators set retention, and offers data residency in ten regions including India. Its inference residency covers only Europe, the United States and the UAE, so prompts from India are processed abroad. Private AI trades the latest hosted models and zero set-up for control, a hardware cost instead of per-seat fees, and the ability to run without the internet.

Question
ChatGPT Enterprise (OpenAI, October 2026)
Private AI in your office
Where prompts are processed
OpenAI’s data centres; inference residency only in Europe, the United States and the UAE
On a device you control, in your building
Where content is stored
A chosen region at rest, including India, for new Enterprise and Edu customers; billing, login and workspace metadata may sit elsewhere
On the device or your own storage
Training on your data
Not by default; data you opt in to share, for example through feedback, is the exception
Nothing goes to a model vendor unless you add a cloud model
Who can see conversations
Users see their own; admins reach an audit log through the Compliance API; authorised OpenAI staff only for incidents, recovery with permission, or legal need
Whoever you give administrator rights
Retention
Set by admins; deleted conversations removed within 30 days unless the law requires otherwise
Your own policy
Models
OpenAI’s hosted models
Open models that fit your hardware
Cost model
Custom pricing for Enterprise; Business is listed at ₹1,800 per user per month on annual billing
Hardware plus support, without per-seat fees
Works without the internet
No
Yes, for the model itself
02
What ChatGPT Enterprise does well
OpenAI says it does not train its models on Enterprise data by default, and that you own your inputs and outputs where the law allows.
It reports a SOC 2 Type 2 audit, AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 or higher in transit, SAML single sign-on and a data processing addendum.
Admins control retention, and the Compliance API gives an audit log of conversations and GPTs.
It offers data residency for storage in ten regions, at no extra cost for Enterprise and Edu.
It gives access to OpenAI’s latest hosted models, connectors and new features without buying hardware.
03
What still sits outside your control
Processing location: inference residency, which keeps GPU execution in-region, is available only in Europe, the United States and the UAE. OpenAI also says CPU work such as extracting text from uploaded PDF and Word files, routing, authentication and analytics may happen outside the chosen region.
Legal orders: in 2025 a US court order required OpenAI to keep consumer ChatGPT and API content, including deleted chats, until the obligation ended on 26 September 2025. OpenAI said Enterprise and Edu were excluded. The episode shows that data a vendor holds can be reached by legal process in the vendor’s own jurisdiction, and that the plan you are on matters.
04
What private AI costs you
Hardware to buy, house and keep running.
Smaller models than the frontier, so some hard tasks go better in the cloud.
No web search or app connectors unless you add them.
Someone must own updates, backups and user accounts. With an appliance that is the vendor; with a server you build, it is your IT person.
05
A practical way to choose
Classify the data before you choose the tool. Public or low-risk content can go to a hosted plan. Sensitive content that your contracts allow in the cloud suits Enterprise with a data processing addendum and the right residency. Records that cannot leave the building, such as case files, patient records or examination papers, need local processing. Many offices will use both.
ANVE is a private AI appliance for offices that takes the local route. ANVE does not update itself over the internet, and if ANVEAI shuts down the box keeps working, with a perpetual licence for the software delivered with the unit and no remote kill switch. It is pre-release: no sealed unit exists yet, and the software runs today on a development machine.

Questions people ask
Is ChatGPT Enterprise private?
It is confidential by contract and settings: OpenAI says it does not train on business data by default and lets admins control retention. It is not private in the sense of staying on your hardware, because processing happens in OpenAI’s cloud.
Does ChatGPT Enterprise keep data in India?
Data at rest can be stored in India for new Enterprise and Edu customers, at no extra cost. Inference residency is offered only in Europe, the United States and the UAE, so model processing for an Indian workspace is not in-country as of October 2026.
Can OpenAI staff read our chats?
OpenAI says authorised employees access Enterprise conversations only to resolve incidents, to recover them with your explicit permission, or where the law requires. For Business workspaces it adds limited engineering-support access and specialised contractors who review for abuse.
When is ChatGPT Enterprise the better choice?
When you want the latest hosted models, connectors and no hardware, and your rules allow cloud processing under a data processing addendum. For records that cannot leave the building, a private system is the option that keeps processing local.

What is not real yet
No sealed ANVE unit exists; every image of the appliance on this site is a labelled render. The software runs today on a development machine. No customers yet, no certifications, no delivery date, and the final price is not announced.
Reservations are ₹999 in India or US$12 elsewhere, refundable in full until you confirm an order in writing (terms). Offices that cannot use cloud AI can apply to be one of ten design partners.
