What is the smallest AI model that is actually useful? It depends on the job. Some jobs work at a few hundred million parameters, others need 27B.
Short answer. It depends on the job. For speech to text, OpenAI’s Whisper small (244 million parameters) is usable in English, with 6.1% word error on a read-speech test, but for Hindi it scores 38.4% against 21.5% for the large-v2 model, so Hindi needs a larger one. For text, 4B-class models handle summaries, extraction and document questions, and ANVE uses nothing smaller than 4B-class for meeting minutes because a 3B-class model assigned an action item to the wrong person in its test. Hard reasoning, long documents and drafting improve steeply with size: in Google DeepMind’s table, Gemma 4 scores 60.0% (E2B), 69.4% (E4B) and 85.2% (31B) on MMLU Pro.

Speech: size matters most outside English
Whisper comes in six sizes. These word error rates are from the FLEURS read-speech test in OpenAI’s paper. A rate above 100% means the transcript has more errors than the audio has words, so it is unusable.

Text: what size buys
Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 card gives results for three of its sizes. Long-context recall falls fastest as the model shrinks.

Why small models still matter
They fit almost anywhere: Qwen3 4B is a 2.5 GB download in Ollama’s library, and Qwen3 0.6B is about half a gigabyte.
They answer quickly, which suits quick jobs such as tagging, routing and short extractions.
They can sit beside a larger model, taking the quick jobs while the larger one takes the hard ones.
05
Where ANVE fits
ANVE One’s launch default is a 27B-class model (Qwen 3.8 27B) plus a fast 4B model, and ANVE never uses a model smaller than 4B-class for minutes. Its test, five synthetic meetings run on 22 September 2026, is described in engineering note 04 as a smoke test and not a benchmark. ANVE is pre-release.

Questions people ask
Is a 1B model useful?
For narrow jobs such as routing, tagging or autocomplete, possibly. For summaries and questions about documents, test it first: even Gemma 4’s 2.3B-effective E2B scores 60.0% on MMLU Pro against 85.2% for the 31B.
What do “effective parameters” mean in Gemma 4 E2B and E4B?
Google DeepMind says the E stands for effective. Per-Layer Embeddings give each decoder layer its own small lookup table, so the effective counts (2.3B and 4.5B) are smaller than the totals with embeddings (5.1B and 8B).
Does a 4B model run on a laptop?
Yes. Qwen3 4B is a 2.5 GB download in Ollama’s library, and LM Studio recommends 16 GB or more of RAM on Apple silicon, with smaller models possible on 8 GB at reduced context.
Why not always use the biggest model?
Bigger models need more memory and answer more slowly: Gemma 3 27B is a 17 GB download. The right size is the smallest one that passes your own tests.
